inlation rate shoy up in June

Director of Population, Census and Social Statistic, Mr Ephraim Kwesigabo, told journalists in Dar es Salaam that inflation rate for food and nonalcoholic beverages in June shot to 8.1 per cent from 7.0 per cent in May, a factor analysts attributed to increased demand for the items during the Holy Month of Ramadhan.
“Annual Inflation Rate for food consumed at home and away from home has increased to 8.3 per cent in June 2016 from 7.2 per cent recorded in May, 2016,” explained Mr Kwesigabo and added: “In addition, the 12 month index change for non-food products has slightly decreased to 3.6 per cent in June 2016 from 3.8 per cent recorded in May, 2016,” indicating the need to spend more on food left with little money for other expenditure.
Headline Inflation Rate measures the inflation rate when all items in the fixed Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket are included. Thus, prices increased only by a modest 0.3 per cent between May and June, this year, basing on price increases for the year ended May 2016.

TSN pull oursimpress at Dar trade fair

Academy’ and ‘Woman’ pull-outs are provided for free in every copy of the ‘Daily News’ on Wednesdays and Thursdays, respectively, while ‘Elimika’ appears every Thursday in ‘HabariLeo newspaper.
‘Academy’ and ‘Elimika’ provide education materials for students from primary school to Form Six while the ‘Woman’ pull-out focuses on various issues concerning women.
The TSN Marketing Coordinator, Mr Chikira Mgheni, told this newspaper that most of the visitors at the pavilion were mainly interested in the supplements. “Many people visited our pavilion during the trade fair, most of whom were attracted by the supplements.
Parents accompanied by their children appreciated the role of the education pull-out in improving teaching and learning in the country,” Mr Mgheni said in an interview. Some of the guests, however, according to the Marketing Coordinator, had little knowledge of the supplements until they visited the exhibition area.
“They have now understood the pull-outs and they have given us a number of recommendations to improve them,” he explained.
Mr Mgheni said the company was set to improve products to be showcased during the trade fair next year, including the history of the company by putting in place an archive of past publications. For his part, TSN’s Sales and Marketing Officer, Mr Festo Mwanjalinja, said the majority of the visitors proposed a public awareness campaign in schools to promote the pull-outs.
They were also of the view that the ‘Woman’ supplement should as well have been published in Kiswahili since most Tanzanians were not conversant with the English language.
For his part, the Information and Communication Specialist, Mr Prosper Mallya, said a number of visitors had queries on the online publications and how they can access subscription and pay for online publications.
According to Mr Mallya, advertisers had as well showed interest to have their adverts posted online as opposed to traditional newspapers, since the former have wider reach compared to the latter.

INDIA LEADER ARRIVE IN TANZANIA

This is his second official visit to Africa as head of state, which is nine months after the third India-Africa Summit with around 50 African heads of state as India eyes to ramp up its Africa engagement.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, East Africa, Regional and International Cooperation, Dr Augustine Mahiga, told reporters in the city that Mr Modi will meet with a group of rural women from poor communities trained by a college in India as solar technicians to help light up their villages.
“The aim of the visit is to further deepen India’s engagement with the African continent and provide opportunities to build on close contacts at the highest political level and enhance mutual cooperation and understanding on major issues of common interests,” he said Dr Mahiga said before he departs to Kenya, Mr Modi will meet with the Indian community living in Tanzania.
At the India-Africa summit in October, India pledged $10 billion in soft loans over the next ten years and $600 million in grant aid. According to Dr Mahiga, the premier will hold talks with President John Magufuli and sign collaboration agreements on various areas including industry, water, education, science and technology.
During his visit, Mr Modi will be accompanied by 50 big and potential business people from India, in which some have shown interest to invest in construction of steel factories, cement, pharmaceuticals and fruit juices.
They will get an opportunity to take part in a conference which will be hosted by Tanzanian premier. India is the largest trading partner of Tanzania in Africa, with bilateral trade in 2013-14 being more than $4 billion.
Exports to India are significantly increasing while imports are declining to bridge the bilateral deficit vis-à-vis India, thanks to efforts to promote the local manufacturing sector and increased motivation by Tanzanians to use local products.
According to the Minister for Industry, Trade and Investments, Mr Charles Mwijage, exports to India increased to 1.32 billion US dollars in 2015, up from 1.25 billion US dollars in 2014 due to an increase in exports of spices, cashews, hides, coconuts, legumes, fish, cotton and sisal products.
Imports from India fell from 1.84 billion US dollars in 2014 to 1.45 billion US dollars in 2015 due to a decline in imports of iron, plastic goods, chemical products, tobacco, corn and tea, he said in Parliament in May.

MAJALIWA : 18 FOREST PLATANTION WILL BE HARVESTING TROUGH TFSA

The government, through TFSA owns 18 forest plantations. Harvesting of timber has been done in eight plantations namely: Sao Hill (Mufindi), Buhindi (Sengerema), Meru/Usa (Arumeru), West Kilimanjaro (Hai), Shume (Lushoto), North Kilimanjaro (Rombo), Kiwira (Rungwe) and Kawetire (Mbeya Rural).
In a statement issued to the ‘Daily News on Saturday’ yesterday by the Prime Minister’s Office, the premier clarified that the suspension was meant for making an evaluation on procedures, regulations and the proper criteria needed in distributing raw materials from the forests.
He called upon all stakeholders whose raw materials depend on forests, especially owners of timber factories, to be patient as the government works on the system, noting that they will be informed immediately after completion of the exercise.
Tanzania has continued to gain from timber exports. Recently, the Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Eng Ramo Makani, told the National Assembly that the country earned 270bn/- from exporting timber for the past five years.
He added that Tanzania’s principal export destinations are India and China. However, he said no funds were realised from the sale of logs because its exports had been banned.
He said that from the year 2010 to last year, a total of 333,404 metric tonnes of timber were exported. India was the leading buyer of timber from Tanzania, The Asian nation purchased a total of 210,968 metric tonnes of timber, followed by China, which bought 68,337 metric tonnes.
The government decided to ban exports of logs and sandalwood and suspend tree-harvesting to protect natural forests. The minister said the government is committed and will continue to curb all forms of poaching, which also include illegal harvesting of logs.
“Proper and effective measures will continue to be taken by the government to ensure this problem remains history,” he assured the House.

MEKI DIRECTS DCs TO CURB SMUGGLER'S ROUTES

The ‘panya routes’ have made the border between Kenya and Tanzania too porous to an extent that it makes its control by security organs a bit difficult and jeopardising the security of the region and the nation at large.
These remarks were made recently by Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner (RC) Saidi Meki Sadiki shortly after swearing in district commissioners in the region.
RC Sadiki said the smugglers routes place the security of the region in jeopardy as well as the economy because most of the commodities imported through those routes do not pay tax.
He also stressed on ensuring the region does not go back to the years where schools lacked desks, forcing the government to come up with special directives to ensure all schools have desks.
RC Sadiki said before the presidential directive, needs for school desks in Kilimanjaro region were at 133,880 for primary schools and 96,704 for secondary schools.
Following efforts from different stakeholders and the government, the region has managed to rehabilitate and make new desks totaling 144,905 out of the needed 133,880 desks for primary schools with a surplus of 11,025 desks.
While for secondary schools, the region managed to make and rehabilitate desks totaling 100,601 out of the 96,704 desks required remaining with a surplus of 3,897 desks.

SHISHA TRADERS ACCEPT COMPLETE CLOSED THEIR BUSINESS

Speaking on behalf of other Shisha dealers at a press conference in the city yesterday, Ms Saphina Said said, “We as a group of owners extend our cooperation to the government by closing our business.”

Shisha is molasses-based tobacco concoction smoked in a water pipe known as ‘hookah’. The position of Shisha dealers comes just two days following the government’s ban, as smoking Shisha as outlined by Prime Minister causes cancer, cardiovascular and skin diseases, rotting gums and teeth, diminished immune of pregnant women giving birth preterm and children with low weight.

Flanked by several other dealers of the commodity, Ms Said told reporters that they have noted the statement given by Prime Minister over side effects caused for smoking shisha and the position by Mr Makonda as trading the commodity contributed to the use of drugs since some dealers mix with drugs.

She pointed out that, however, that it was their hope that they would get an opportunity to meet with the regional commissioner after the Idd el-Fitr celebrations to discuss and air their views on the way forward and find the best way on how such business could be regulated.

“After the seven days given by the government are over, we would like to sit with Mr Makonda to discuss this issue in detail. We are ready even where there would be a law to regulate our business. But as of now, we have to obey the orders of our leaders,” another dealer, Jibril Mohamed, chipped in.

The businessmen could not reveal the extent of loss they have so far suffered following the ban, but Mr Mohamed was quick to say: “We cannot disclose the extent of loss suffered at the moment.

But you should understand that every decision has some effects. For today we reserve our comments.” Recently, the Prime Minister, Mr Kassim Majaliwa, banned shisha smoking in the country and asked clerics, parents and all leaders to fight against dealers and smokers.

The PM’s order came as Dar es Salaam RC declared war against dealers of tobacco-laced shisha in the country’s business capital, insisting that all the joints that sell shisha should be closed by next Monday.

Mr Majaliwa said the consumption of shisha resulted into temptation to indulge in all sorts of vices and eroding morals among the youth. “The statement by Mr Makonda came as a government directive.

Therefore, all regional leaders, including mayors and district commissioners (DCs) should implement that directive with immediate effect,’’ the premier is quoted as saying.

He issued the directive at the Khoja Shia Ithnaasheri Mosque along Indira Gandhi Street in Dar es Salaam during a special Iftar hosted by the Ithnaasheri Community, which was attended by various religious leaders.

Mr Majaliwa warned that stern action would be taken against those who will defy the order, adding that both parents and government leaders were capable of dealing with the problem.

He said the use of shisha was killing the future generation of the country by wreaking havoc on the mental health of the young people. At a ceremony to swear in the newly-appointed District Commissioners (DC) at the Karimjee Hall in the city, Mr Makonda issued a warning to Shisha marketers after swearing in four DCs at a ceremony held.

He directed the DCs to ensure that they crack the whip to all dealers that would defy his order, adding that the move is aimed at helping the youth who, he said, were being largely affected.

The habit is gaining popularity among the youth, with many believing it is less harmful than cigarettes, but health experts say it is much worse.

A research by the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that the volume of smoke inhaled in an hour-long shisha session is equivalent to smoking between 100 and 200 cigarettes.

On average, a cigarette smoker inhales half a litre of smoke per cigarette, while a shisha smoker can take in anything from just under a sixth of a litre to a litre of smoke per inhalation.

MEGA 1.8 BILLION FERTILISER PLANT PLANNED FOR KILWA-TANZANIA

The plant, to be built by Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) and three private companies will use natural gas as both a source of energy and feedstock for production, hence conserving the environment.
TPDC Director of Downstream Operations, Dr Wellington Hudson, told the ‘Daily News’ recently that the plant will produce 3,850 tonnes per day, adding that TPDC was finalising payment of compensation to 24 residents to pave way for the project.
“TPDC will hold up to 20 per cent shares in the jointventure business with three foreign companies,” said Dr Hudson during a familiarisation tour by the corporation’s board of directors.
He mentioned the companies in the business as the Ferrostaal Industrial Project from German, the Denmark based Haldor Topsoe Company and Fauji Fertiliser Company from Pakistan.
“We’re finalising the issue of compensation to residents to pave way for the project, which will be carried out for 40 months,” he said. Dr Hudson said the first plant, to be built in Kilwa Masoko, would create a number of employment opportunities, adding that it would also fetch foreign currency from fertiliser exports.
Kilwa District Land Officer, Mr Ernest Mwakang’ata, said the district’s authority has started the process for the payment of compensation to 23 residents at the area, pointing out that although the 820-acre land is owned by TPDC, it had since 1989 been encroached by residents in the area.
“The residents had encroached upon the area after TPDC failed to develop the area for a very long time,’’ the land officer told reporters. However, Mr Mwakang’ata said TPDC have agreed to pay compensation to the residents to vacate the area.
The firm has also allocated 400 acres more to accommodate residential needs of the villagers. A TPDC board member, Judge (retired) Josephat Makanja, expressed delight on the project, saying the plant would boost national development.

NEWZZZ..... UGANDA-TANZANIA OIL PIPELINE ARE FINALISING DRAFTING CONTRACTS

In summary

Stakeholder in the envisaged 4-billion US dollar crude oil pipeline from kabale in Uganda to Tanga port in Tanzania are finalising drafting contracts to establish a company that would oversee implementation of the mega project, it has been learnt.

Parties in the scheme include the governments of Tanzania and Uganda as well as Total E&P of France, Tullow Oil of the United Kingdom and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).
The Managing Director of the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), Dr James Mataragio, told the ‘Daily News’ at the ongoing 40th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF) that the company will be known as Pipeline Company (PIPECO).
According to the TPDC boss, PIPECO will be charged with seeking funds, procuring goods and services and operating the oil pipeline.
“In essence the project has already started but physical work will kick-off after final investment decision is reached by mid next year,” he explained.
He added; “The envisaged company will have to seek 60 per cent of the funds to implement the project while the involved stakeholders will foot the remaining 40 per cent.”
Tanzania will charge Uganda 12.5 US dollars for a barrel of oil while the former has also been invited to own 8 per cent shares in an oil refinery to be set up in Hoima to refine oil for countries in the East African region.
Asked whether Tanzania had plans to set up a refinery in Tanga, Mr Mataragio said the country is not considering setting up the facility at the moment as doing so will render the refinery in Uganda redundant.
“Uganda plans to construct the processing plant to refine oil for the East African market and thus setting up a similar facility in Tanzania is not feasible at the moment. We may consider the plant in the future,” Dr Mataragio stated.
He pointed as well that the Kabale-Tanga pipeline was among flagship projects being undertaken by the TPDC. Uganda chose the Tanzanian route for the oil pipeline in April, this year, amid stiff competition from Kenya, which also wanted it to be routed to yet to be constructed Lamu Port in North-Eastern Kenya.
The pipeline through Tanzania will be of benefit not only to Uganda and Tanzania but other countries in the region such as Kenya, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The envisaged 24-inch conduit to cover 1,403 kilometres from Kabale to Tanga is expected to convey 200,000 barrels of crude oil per day for exports. It is expected to create 15,000 jobs during its execution after which upon completion it will employ between 1,000 and 2,000 people.
It will pass through Kagera, Geita, Shinyanga, Tabora and Singida to Tanga. Uganda has so far discovered 6.5 billion barrels of the precious liquid along the Lake Albert basin. The first finding was made by Hardman Resources in 2006 which was later acquired by Tullow Oil.
At present, three companies own 33.3 per cent each of the oil fields and they include Total E&P, Tullow Oil and CNOOC.
The companies also plan to construct an oil refinery to process 60,000 barrels per day to cater for demand of petroleum products in East Africa while between 200,000 and 600,000 barrels will be transported in crude form through the pipelines for exports outside the EAC.
